The card technology influences the daily routine like no other. In almost every pocket you find one of it –– as customer loyalty or company access card. The demand for contacless cards is still strong.
Contactless cards go without the physical reader contact. It is a pocket sized card with embedded integrated circuits that can process and store data and communicate with a terminal via radio waves (RFID). Contactless cards are essential for a range of applications like in the area of access control. The reason for this popularity is that they are easy to handle, secure and almost wear-free. The most commonly used systems are in the area of 13.56 MHz. Institutions and companies prefer this frequency as they have to transfer the data volume over a short distance.
The contactless card technology is also suited for high security levels. In particular, microprocessor cards with a storage capacity of currently up to 144 kilobytes. These chips are equipped with java card operating systems or native card operating systems. The advantages: It is not only possible to store the data, but also to process it. Beyond that, cryptological protocols on the chip improve the level of data security by encryption, like in the MIFARE Desfire solution via Triple-DES encoding. A file system enables the exact separation and free configuration of the different applications by size, security level, key administration and management of access rights. The information transfer is done on the international standard ISO 14443.
PAV produces contactless identity cards for many companies and institution like the police department of Abu Dhabi. In this case the Arabic state counts on very heat resistant solutions like PC or PET cards. Both materials are heat resistant up to 120 °C. Due to the robust material, one can use the cards up to ten years. In addition to the right material mix, sometimes it is necessary to combine or extend the function of the card with both - contact and contactless device. For this a hybrid card could be a good solution.
